The winner from Harpers Heroes has her say
12-Nov-09
Dear Harpers,
I want to thank you for everything you did to organise such a splendid event. I had a wonderful time at Bisham Abbey and was thrilled to be shortlisted for the award. That in itself would have been enough but when it was announced that I had won my category I was overwhelmed.
I have had such good times at my local gym and swimming pool in Spalding that I think the folk there deserve an award too. I know I have to have the determination and commitment to make progress but the entire staff, in particular Cheryl, Kimberley and Tracey, provide excellent direction and encouragement. On Monday I climbed eleven steps on the step machine before flaking out and on Tuesday I managed to swim to the deep end of the pool for the first time in my life. These may sound like small things but they mean such a lot to me. When I first became ill I just wanted to hide away but the gym has helped me regain my life both physically and socially.
When, at the end of the proceedings, it was announced that I had won the overall award, I was almost speechless! My lifetime membership of Harpers will be invaluable as both my husband and I intend to continue using the facilities for as long as we are able. I could not have done anything without the help of my long-suffering husband so I will spend the cash prize on a super holiday for us both next year.
I met many wonderful people that night and was amazed at how much gym use improves the lives of ordinary people struggling to cope with many and varied problems. I hope these awards encourage others to overcome their difficulties and live more healthy and fulfilling lives.
Thank you very much for everything,
Ann
