  • Harpers Fitness Support Men’s Health Week: 15th – 21st June

    03-Jun-09

Every year during Men’s Health Week, thousands of men are encouraged to become more aware of preventable health problems and seek regular medical advice.

More men are dying from skin cancer than women, topping 1000 a year; a rise of a third in the past decade. This is all down to the fact that fewer men than women are diagnosed with melanoma because it is usually detected later, when it is more difficult to treat.

“Checking yourself after a warm bath or shower is the perfect time to have a closer look at your body. Heat relaxes your muscles, making it easier to spot anything abnormal” says Kevin Yates, Harpers Fitness National Health & Fitness Manager. “It’s important that if anything seems to be out of the ordinary to seek medical advice. More than half of us never or rarely check ourselves and ignorance can be a killer. Even exercise can help to balance hormone levels, prevent obesity and boost the immune system, so you know you’ll be doing everything right with a trip to the gym in June!”

“Nutrition is another important factor. Small positive changes in your diet can have fantastic results. Reduce your saturated fat intake; lower the amount of salt you add to your food and consume alcohol moderately and within recommended guidelines. Try to eat six portions of brightly coloured fruit and vegetables a day and keep hydrated! Multiply your body weight in kilograms by 0.033 to calculate how much water in litres you should aim to drink.”

“Following simple advice, self examining and seeking medical advice where things don’t appear to be crystal clear could save your life” says Kevin. “Have a look online at www.harpersfitness.co.uk for Harpers very own Men’s Health Week tips.”
