  • Harpers Fitness help thousands take to the water

    14-Apr-09

The launch of the Government’s two year free swimming initiative has been a fantastic success with thousands of people taking to pools since it launched.

Harpers Fitness, which is supporting the campaign by working with participating Councils to provide free swimming, has welcomed over 5000 additional people into their swimming pools since the launch last week (Wednesday 1st April).

British Olympic swimming star Mark Foster helped to launch the initiative by taking to the water at Harrow Leisure Centre, which now offers free swimming to people aged 60 and over and those aged 16 and under. The £140 million programme lasts for two years and is a central part of plans to ensure a lasting legacy from the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. It is hoped that free swimming will help to introduce more people to the sport as a way of leading a healthier lifestyle.

"We are delighted with the popularity of free swimming and hope this will continue. This is certainly a popular initiative but there is still plenty of availability for people to register at their local centre. Swimming can be the perfect addition to a healthy lifestyle and we believe that participation will allow more people to lead a more active and healthy lifestyle.”
